Burlington Coat Factory Relies on Proofpoint Protection Server to Eliminate Spam

Proofpoint Maintains High Level of Anti-Spam Effectiveness in the Face of Image-Based Spam and Four-Fold Increase in Email Volume
Cupertino, Calif. – May 21, 2007 – Proofpoint, Inc., the leader in large-enterprise messaging security solutions, today announced that Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation, a national retailer offering clothing, footwear and accessories, is using the Proofpoint Protection Server® software to protect its email users from unwanted spam messages. Proofpoint has consistently eliminated spam for the company for more than two years, delivering higher than 99 percent effectiveness even as the volume of inbound email has jumped from an average of 100,000 to 450,000 messages per day.

A Proofpoint customer since 2005, Burlington Coat Factory turned to Proofpoint because its previous anti-spam solution required a significant amount of manual intervention and maintenance in order to provide an adequate level of spam protection. After deploying the Proofpoint Protection Server, Burlington Coat Factory’s email administrators found that virtually all spam messages were blocked with minimal false positives and with very little involvement from IT staff.

“Because new spamming techniques are continually evolving, we wanted a solution that not only allowed us ‘set and forget’ convenience, but one that also gave us the flexibility to adjust filtering levels for certain types of messages,” said Matt Marchione, IT security for Burlington Coat Factory. “With Proofpoint, we are happy with the level of protection the software provides against many existing and emerging messaging threats, while ensuring that important emails always get through to their intended recipients.”

Burlington Coat Factory currently uses the latest version of Proofpoint’s messaging security platform, Proofpoint Protection Server 4. In addition to the Proofpoint Spam Detection™ module, the company also makes use of Proofpoint’s email firewall features, which allow them to define and enforce acceptable use policies for outbound message content and attachments, such as monitoring offensive language, enforcing maximum message sizes and limiting attachment types.

“The dramatic increase in inbound email volume at Burlington Coat Factory is consistent with the industry trend, with volumes surging by two to four times on average and consisting largely of spam messages,” said Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president of products and marketing for Proofpoint. “We continue to develop new, highly effective spam blocking techniques powered by Proofpoint MLX™, our patent-pending machine learning system. MLX allows our solutions to accurately identify incoming spam messages, analyze the contents of outbound messages for the presence of confidential information, and to identify malicious network-level connections.”

Proofpoint MLX provides outstanding accuracy against all types of spam by examining hundreds of thousands of structural, reputation, image processing and text content attributes using a combination of advanced statistical analysis engines. Traditional anti-spam solutions evaluate only a limited number of attributes and are unable to decisively classify spam, leading to low effectiveness and a high number of misclassified messages. The advanced methods used in Proofpoint’s anti-spam solution offer extremely high effectiveness against both “traditional” and image-based spam outbreaks—averaging higher than 99.6% effectiveness during the month of March, as measured against Proofpoint’s network of honeypots.
